Class 10 Chemistry Question Bank: Common Topics for CBSE and ICSE

Practise a focused Class 10 Chemistry question bank covering equations, periodic properties, acids and bases, organic chemistry and numerical reasoning.

CBSEICSEChemistryClass 10

A good Chemistry question bank should test explanation, equations, observation, application and calculation—not just memory. The questions below are a compact diagnostic set for Class 10 students. Match them to your current board syllabus before using them.

Chemical reactions and equations

  1. Balance a displacement reaction and identify which substance is oxidised and which is reduced.
  2. Explain, using one equation, why respiration is described as an exothermic process.
  3. A metal carbonate reacts with dilute acid. State the expected observations and write a balanced equation.
  4. How would you distinguish decomposition caused by heat from decomposition caused by light?

Acids, bases and salts

  1. Explain why an aqueous acid conducts electricity but a dry acid may not show the same behaviour.
  2. Predict how pH changes when a strong acid is diluted ten times. Explain the direction of change.
  3. Write the preparation, one property and one everyday use of a salt included in your syllabus.
  4. Design a simple test to distinguish an acidic solution from a basic one using two different indicators.

Periodic properties and bonding

  1. Explain the change in atomic size across a period.
  2. Compare ionic and covalent compounds in terms of melting point and electrical conductivity.
  3. An element has two electrons in its outermost shell. Predict the kind of ion it is likely to form and explain why.
  4. Draw the electron-dot structure of a compound specified in your board syllabus.

Metals and extraction

  1. Why are highly reactive metals extracted by electrolysis rather than reduction with carbon?
  2. Arrange three given metals using observations from displacement reactions.
  3. Explain corrosion and describe two prevention methods.
  4. State the role of an electrolyte in an electrorefining process.

Organic chemistry

  1. Distinguish saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons using structure and a chemical test.
  2. Write an equation for combustion and explain why incomplete combustion is harmful.
  3. Identify the functional group in an alcohol and a carboxylic acid.
  4. Explain the idea of a homologous series with one suitable example.

How to use this question bank

Answer without notes, mark uncertain questions, and then verify terminology and equations from your prescribed text. Rewrite incorrect equations in a separate reaction notebook. One week later, attempt only the marked questions again.
